Orca-90 DW Deep Water. Downhole CPT & soil sampling system

The Geomil Equipment Orca-90 DW (Deep Water) is the latest addition to the successful Orca downhole Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) series of tools. The Orca-90 DW is a versatile and fully integrated CPT and sampling system for downhole use and is designed to be combined with several existing drilling methods.
The Orca-90 DW is rated to operate in water depths of up to 3,000 m. The system is deployed as a wireline or umbilical operated tool, allowing either CPT or soil sampling to be conducted intermittently. Once the CPT or soil sampling is completed, drilling can be advanced to the next test depth. The Orca-90 DW is pressurized with water, thereby omitting the need for hydraulic oil, making it environmentally safe.
The CPT data can be received in real-time when used in umbilical mode while a backup is stored in the cone. The tool utilizes a narrow data-wireline umbilical that not only ensures excellent communication at depth but has an outside diameter of only 16 mm allowing the use of smaller winches than traditional hose systems. The real-time data transfer allows for the safe use of the 3 m stroke version while maintaining reduced risk of equipment loss and increasing productivity. The Orca penetration length measurements are accurate thanks to the use of a downhole depth encoder.

The Orca-90 DW tooling consists of:
• Orca-CPT, the tool to perform CPT tests, available in 1.5 m and 3 m stroke.
• Orca-PST, the piston sampler tool, for high quality 1,000 mm long sampling in soft soil conditions.
• Orca-PSH, the push sampler tool, for 1,000 mm long window sampling where the Orca-PST would be too delicate.

• Constant tension (CT) winch, incl. Orca data wireline fiber optic umbilical and termination.
• Umbilical sheave.
• Orca data control box (GSN).
• High-pressure water pump.

Suitable drill systems and sizes:
• API 4 ½ ” IF (NC50).
• API 5 ½ ” FH.
• PQ(3) coring system.

Alternative sizes can be accommodated. The largest OD of the Orca tools is 4 ” (101.6 mm)
